Best Method for Propagating Lemon Trees from Cuttings

The most common and generally successful method involves taking semi-hardwood cuttings and providing them with optimal conditions for rooting.

1. Timing is Key: The best time to take lemon tree cuttings is during late spring or early summer when the tree is actively growing and the weather is warm and humid.

2. Selecting the Right Cutting:

  • Choose a healthy, vigorous branch that is about 6-8 inches long and 1/4 to 3/8 inches thick.
  • Look for “semi-hardwood” – new year’s growth that is starting to turn brown but isn’t fully woody or bark-covered yet. It should be flexible but not overly soft.
  • Avoid branches with flowers or fruit, as the plant’s energy will be diverted away from root development.
  • Ensure the cutting has at least 2-3 nodes (where leaves emerge).

3. Preparing the Cutting:

  • Sterilize your pruning shears or knife with rubbing alcohol or a bleach solution (1 part bleach to 9 parts water) to prevent disease.
  • Make a clean cut at a 45-degree angle just below a leaf node.
  • Remove all leaves from the lower half to two-thirds of the cutting to reduce moisture loss and prevent rotting in the soil. Leave a few leaves at the top to support photosynthesis.
  • Optional: If the remaining leaves are very large, you can cut them in half horizontally to further reduce water loss.

4. Using Rooting Hormone:

  • Rooting hormone significantly increases the chances of success. Dip the cut end of the prepared cutting into rooting hormone powder or gel. Tap off any excess.
    • Natural alternatives: Some gardeners use aloe vera gel or even cinnamon powder as natural rooting aids, which also have antifungal properties.

5. Choosing the Right Growing Medium:

  • A well-draining, sterile potting mix is crucial to prevent rot. Good options include:
    • A mixture of perlite and peat moss (50/50).
    • Coarse sand or river sand.
    • Seed-starting mix.
